You are your own media company
Are you interested in how social media marketing works and I mean really works? This recent PBS Frontline documentary Generation Like, by Douglas Rushkoff (author of Present Shock), gets at the underlying psychological need to be ‘liked’ and the desire for engagement that drives the like-based economy. The documentary is immensely fascinating and a bit scary, especially if you have kids who will be growing up in this new world. It is definitely a must watch.Marketers act a bit like the man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz
What I find interesting is how the advent of social media has turned what used to be a singularly dimensioned marketing layer into a multi-dimensional, mirror within a mirror, construct. Where marketers act a bit like the man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz to get fans to act on their behalf promoting their brands. In doing so, the fan-cum-marketer becomes a brand in and of their own right. This starts the loop of brand-fan-marketer over again in a recursive loop. You are your own media company.
This infinitely recursive model is rapidly transforming the marketing, publishing, and media industries. As Oliver Luckett, Founder & CEO of theAudience puts it “you are your own media company”. There definitely some truth to that statement. Whether it is trying to grow your business, break into media, or find your next job, all the experts seems to be constantly underling the need for people to publish and build their own followerships.
While this transformative force is minting new stars and millionaires, I can’t help but think it also sounds a bit like a ponzi scheme.
